How to Maintain Aluminium Windows & Doors in Rwanda's Climate
Maintaining Aluminium Windows & Doors in Rwanda
One of aluminium's greatest advantages is low maintenance β but "low" doesn't mean "zero". Rwanda's combination of heavy rains, intense sun, red dust, and occasional hailstorms means your aluminium windows and doors need occasional care to stay in perfect condition. Here's exactly what to do.
Routine Cleaning (Monthly)
Frame Cleaning
- Rinse the frame with a hose or damp cloth to remove surface dust
- Mix a solution of warm water and mild dish soap
- Wipe down with a soft cloth β avoid abrasive pads that scratch anodized or powder-coated surfaces
- Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean cloth
- Never use: bleach, acidic cleaners, steel wool, or solvents
Glass Cleaning
Use a glass cleaner or vinegar-water solution. Clean in the morning or evening (not in direct sunlight) to prevent streaks. Wipe in one direction β top to bottom.
Track & Channel Maintenance (Every 3 Months)
Sliding windows and doors have tracks that collect dust, soil, and debris from Rwanda's roads. Blocked tracks cause hard operation and can damage rollers.
- Vacuum or brush out loose debris from the track
- Wipe the track with a damp cloth
- Apply a thin layer of silicone spray lubricant (not WD-40 β it attracts dust)
- Slide the window/door back and forth several times to distribute the lubricant
Hardware Lubrication (Every 6 Months)
- Hinges: Apply a drop of light machine oil or silicone lubricant to each hinge pivot point
- Lock mechanisms: Spray graphite powder into the keyhole and cylinder
- Friction stays: Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to stay arms
- Roller assemblies: Adjust roller height screws if door/window drags
Rubber Seal Inspection (Annually)
EPDM rubber seals around glass panels prevent water ingress and reduce noise. In Rwanda's climate, UV exposure gradually hardens them.
- Press the seal with your finger β it should spring back
- If cracked or hardened, replace it (EPDM seal rolls available at our showroom)
- Re-seal corner joints with clear silicone if gaps appear
